Mona's musical exploration began in a gospel choir in Jersey City at the age of 8 where she was introduced to music by Kirk Franklin and Mary Mary, piquing her interest for the vocal prowess of great gospel singers. She then transitioned into the realm of R&B, soulful pop, and jazz, inspired by Alicia Keys, John Legend, Mary J. Blige, Whitney Houston, Sarah Vaughan, Billie Holiday, Astrud Gilberto, and Betty Carter; all the while, never straying from her Caribbean roots, absorbing the colorful, rhythmic sounds of merengue, salsa, & bachata at home.
In high school, Mona was accepted into the Visual & Performing Arts High School Program of Jersey City and was awarded recognition for Best Vocalist in the program. In the VPAHSP she traveled to Germany with a group of young musicians for the Oberhavel Music & Arts Festival near Berlin and toured Germany with the program's jazz & swing ensemble at age 15. In the VPAHS Program, she also studied classical voice and the choral music of Rachmaninov, Bach, Mozart, & Fauré which refined her vocal skills and technique.
Mona went on to Montclair State University and performed with the choir & jazz ensembles of the John Cali School of Music throughout her four years. She studied music & fine art abroad in Nice, France for a summer semester and performed at jam sessions on the Mediterranean. She graduated with a Bachelor of the Fine Arts in Graphic Design degree in 2011 and continued to perform in the metro area as she found design work in the Fashion District in New York City.
Today, Mona resides in New York City and is a fashion print designer by day, and jazz singer by night. She has performed at venues Pianos in the LES and Toshi’s Living Room and frequents jam sessions in New York City & the metropolitan area.
